Patient-Centered Care for Patients in OTPs: NWATTC Webinar, Feb. 28, 2018

Peavy_smThis is the 2nd webinar in a new monthly series from the Northwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center. 

Presenter K. Michelle Peavy, PhD will examine the concept of patient-centered care in an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) setting.  She will describe a treatment model that leverages patient-centered care components and enhances retention among individuals who struggle with ongoing drug use, and discuss clinical implications of that model.  Dr. Peavy is a licensed clinical psychologist in the role of Research and Training Manager at Evergreen Treatment Services (ETS), an OTP located in Seattle, WA.

New! E-Learning Series about Marijuana

MjelearnNew on ADAI's Learn About Marijuana website is a set of 5 short modules created to answer frequently asked questions about marijuana.

The modules are interactive, with links to added resources of interest to helping professionals, teachers, parents, and anyone interested in learning about marijuana.  The 5 modules cover:

  • Our Bodies & Marijuana: learn about the endocannabinoid system, the effects of THC and CBD on the human body, and the difference between plant-based and synthetic cannabinoids. (10 min.)
  • Concentrates, Edibles, & Flowers: learn about the different products and methods of use, and how they differ in terms of potency and adverse effects. (15 min.)
  • Marijuana Law in Washington State: what is the current law in our state, for both recreational and medical use of marijuana? (10 min.)
  • Helping Someone Quit/Cut Back: especially for those in the helping professions (counselors, health care providers) and also for friends, parents, and family members. (25 min.)
  • Other Questions: learn about workplace testing, cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, whether marijuana is a “gateway drug,” and more. (10 min.)

The educational series was developed by Beatriz Carlini, PhD, MPH; Sharon Garrett, MA, MPH; and Meg Brunner, MLIS, Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute, University of Washington with support from the Washington State Marijuana Dedicated Fund.

UW Seattle Postdoctoral Fellowships in Addiction Research & Treatment

Psychology Training in Alcohol Research (PTAR) Fellowship

This is a two‐year appointment, commencing no earlier than July 1st and no later than December 31st of each year, within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and the Addictive Behaviors Research Center in the Department of Psychology, and is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (Principal Investigator, Dr. Mary Larimer).  This fellowship will provide training for individuals who wish to pursue a career in alcohol research, with an emphasis on the etiology and prevention of problem drinking and alcohol dependence.  As this topic will be approached from both psychosocial and bio‐behavioral perspectives, individuals with background training in relevant areas of psychology (clinical, health psychology, behavioral neuroscience, social, developmental, cognitive, behavioral pharmacology, etc.) are encouraged to apply.  Both human and animal research will be supported.

Substance Use Disorders Postdoctoral Fellowships, VA Puget Sound

The VA Puget Sound Health Care System (Seattle and American Lake) announces the availability of 13 first-year positions in our Postdoctoral Fellowship program, beginning in August 2018. All fellows participate in advanced training in clinical psychology, with a focus in one of 10 areas: PTSD, Substance Use, Neuropsychology, Couple and Family Care, Primary Care, Rehabilitation, Telehealth, Specialty Medicine, Serious Mental Illness, and Mental Health (Anxiety and Mood Disorders). Our program is APA accredited in Clinical Psychology as a single, integrated program.

The Substance Use Disorders Fellowship, with two first-year positions available, emphasizes the inter-professional treatment of substance use disorders in conjunction with the Seattle VA's national Center of Excellence in Substance Addiction Treatment and Education (CESATE). The resident will spend approximately 70-80% time working within interprofessional teams providing evidence-based treatments and practices to Veterans with a variety of substance use disorders. Additional time is devoted to didactic seminars, program development and evaluation, and clinical research. The duration of the CESATE fellowship is one year. The possibility of renewal for a second year, following completion of the accredited fellowship, can be considered for fellows with further advanced goals in administration, education and/or clinical research.

If You Missed It: WATCH 2017 King County Behavioral Health Legislative Forum

image from adai.typepad.comThe 2017 King County Behavioral Health Legislative Forum on Nov. 8 brought together over 600 participants to hear from legislators & other policy makers, and individuals in recovery from substance use disorders.  This annual event is a "community conversation about mental health and substance abuse addressing key legislative priorities for the upcoming year, as well as current innovations and outcomes in behavioral healthcare in King County."
 
At the 2017 forum, speakers included King County Executive Dow Constantine, King County Behavioral Health and Recovery Division Director Jim Vollendroff, and Washington Recovery Alliance Executive Director Lauren Davis.

International Community Corrections Association Meeting, Seattle, Oct 29 - Nov 1

ICCA-logoThe International Community Corrections Association will meet on Oct 29 - Nov 1 in Seattle. The conference theme is Integrating Public Health and Criminal Justice Reform to address issues related to: The Opiate epidemic; Employment; Homelessness; and Mental health.

Dr. Caleb Banta-Green from the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute will facilitate two panels:

  • National physician experts on how and why to treat opioid use disorder while people are incarcerated and
  • King County Opioid Task Force members discussing their perspectives on how to work together to improve public health and public safety and support recovery.

Please attend and invite your colleagues to attend. We are on the precipice of changing how we work to dramatically improve people’s lives, public health and public safety.
