Position Open: Director, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute, University of Washington, Seattle

The ADAI Director reports to the Executive Director, Health Science Administration (HSA), for administrative oversight.  Matters related to the scientific, health, information, and policy missions are managed and promoted by the Director with support from HSA.  The University of Washington provides an extraordinary environment for discovery, teaching, and service.  The University is recognized as one of the largest, most successful public universities in the world and a wide variety of partnerships are either existing or available to the Director to further the ADAI mission.

While ADAI is not an academic unit, opportunities exist for the Director to pursue joint academic appointment with an academic department depending on interest and alignment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide scientific, policy, information dissemination and practice leadership of ADAI
• Has their own active portfolio of relevant research/evaluation/policy analysis and external grant support
• Facilitate and support ADAI  researchers to acquire and manage external grants and contracts
• Provide mentoring, support, and supervision for the further development of ADAI researchers
• Along with assigned staff, provide general oversight for the ADAI Small Grants Program
• Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships/partnerships with local, State, tribal, regional, and national organizations and agencies whose work is related to the mission of ADAI
• Facilitate and support involvement of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in ADAI activities
• Responsible for oversight of ADAI administration, personnel and financial operations
• With administrative staff, Prepare and oversee ADAI’s annual and biennial operating budgets
• Oversee ADAI strategic planning efforts
• Attend quarterly Health Sciences Administration (HSA) Directors’ meetings and assure that ADAI and its operation are consistent with HSA policy and procedures
• Represent ADAI within University administrative committees and task forces as requested
• Serve as a reviewer of substance-related Washington State legislation that may affect the University’s operations or finances for the Office of Budget and Planning

REQUIREMENTS:
• Ph.D., M.D., DrPH (or comparable terminal degree) in a field relevant to substance use / addiction
• Strong record of research productivity and/or policy and practice impacts in relevant areas of substance use/ addictions research, as reflected by:
o Record of peer-reviewed publications and national professional presentations
o Record of successful external funding
o Plans to maintain an actively funded program of research, evaluation, policy analysis, or evidence based practice dissemination
• Extensive demonstrated experience working with diverse stakeholders to advance the scientific understanding of addiction in order to impact policy and practice.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE
• Demonstrated skills in program management, particularly in areas related to substance use/addictions research/policy/practice activities
• Experience in recruiting, mentoring, and developing junior research scientists
• Although ADAI is not an academic unit, experience in teaching, training, and mentoring graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows
• Recognition in the field of substance use/addictions research/policy/practice as demonstrated by involvement in professional organizations, editorial board memberships, review or advisory panel memberships
• Evidence of collaboration with other researchers, institutions, or organizations involved in substance use/addictions research/policy/practice at a state, regional or national level

Marijuana Research Info Job - Great for iSchool or Information-savvy UW Student

Shutterstock_366642830The UW Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute has a great job for a UW student to work on a Marijuana Research Information Project!  This job is part-time (10-19.5 hrs/week) for one academic quarter or more. We're starting a project to identify and track research studies, publications, and people with expertise on marijuana -- especially in or about Washington State.

This individual will perform lit searches, index and annotate citations, update bibliographic databases to track publications and expertise on marijuana (cannabis); assist with the creation and update of a newsletter and other communications to inform research, policy, community, and other stakeholder communities about marijuana research relevant to Washington State.

Two Positions Open in New Addiction Treatment Training Center

Region10statesADAI has two positions open for the new 5-year, SAMHSA-funded Northwest Addiction Technology Center (NWATTC), part of the National Addiction Technology Transfer Network. PNATTC will provide training and technical assistance, systems consultation, and information dissemination for the four state region of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska, serving the behavioral and healthcare organizations and workforce. The goal of the PNATTC is to increase awareness and implementation of empirically supported addiction treatment and recovery practices in the region. The PNATTC will begin operations on October 1, 2017. 

Continuing Education (80% FTE) will represent the PNATTC at workgroups and consortia within Washington and Alaska and organize PNATTC events in these states. The CE Specialist will coordinate and provide both online and in-person training, technical assistance, and consultation about empirically-supported treatment and recovery practices. This position requires travel within Washington state and the Pacific NW region, and occasionally to national meetings.  Details and application

Continuing Education Specialist @ ADAI's Center for Opioid Safety Education

EducationThe UW Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute has an opening for a Continuing Education Specialist 2, who will be responsible for day-to-day activities of the Center for Opioid Safety Education (COSE) at ADAI, helping to develop a comprehensive, evidence-informed response to the growing crisis of opioid use and overdose in Washington state. COSE provides training and technical assistance to communities, professionals, and policy makers to increase awareness of overdose risks, educate about overdose response and naloxone administration, and the implementation of effective interventions to reduce opioid overdose and treat opioid use disorder.  Responsibilities include conducting training for professionals and community members and providing technical assistance on overdose prevention interventions. The position will also be involved in purchasing and overseeing distribution of naloxone including supporting documentation of overdose education and naloxone distribution, use and refills. This position will also promote overdose education by adapting the latest evidence base into educational materials appropriate for the general population and specific professions; updating content and e-learning tools on the StopOverdose.org website; coordinating webinars; and organizing public events and forums as needed. This project is funded through September 2017 by Washington State’s Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery with continued funding anticipated.

Salary: is $5200 - $5700 / month, or $62,400 - $68,400 / year, with excellent benefits.

Actors Needed for Secret Shopper Work in Seattle, Nov-Dec 2016

ShopperActors will be required to perform a secret shopper research protocol in the greater Seattle area. Sometimes they will also play an “observer" or “friend of the secret shopper” who watches the interaction between the secret shopper and the salesperson. Both the secret shopper and the observer will be required to later record events and return completed data collection forms to the research team for analysis.  Qualifying actors must be able to:

  • Prove that they are 21 years of age or older
  • Look under 21 years of age
  • Provide a valid college ID (even if not currently enrolled in college)

Actors must be able to work as a team professionally and responsibly with another actor for hours at a time while conducting secret shopper visits. Actors will be transported to test locations by a research staff member.

These positions are working under a federal research grant overseen by professional research staff, and actors will be hired as independent contractors.

Actors will be paid $30 per hour for approximately 30 hours of work per week for 2 weeks during November and December 2016. A schedule will be provided in advance along a short script and paid rehearsal time.

Job for Nurse Consultant - Opioids & Opioid Use Disorder Educator

Cose_logoThe ADAI Center for Opioid Safety Education is seeking a Nurse Consultant to work in collaborative project between ADAI and the WA State Dept of Health. This is a DOH staff position funded by a CDC grant to serve as a DOH clinical subject matter expert on opioid prescribing guidelines, opioid use disorder, evidence based preventions/interventions and treatments.

The position reports directly to a WMS 2 manager in DOH's Office of Community Health Systems in Tumwater but will be placed at, and work out of, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the UW. Regular intra-state travel will be required. Duties include:

  • Provides technical assistance and clinical consulting services to health care providers and WA State communities about managing opioid prescribing and opioid use disorders.
  • Develops strategies in conjunction with DOH and University of WA based on emerging data.
  • Develops processes for monitoring ongoing performance and impact of technical assistance.  Use quality improvement process to help opioid intervention/prevention efforts meet grant goals and objectives.
  • Collaborates and communicates with a broad spectrum of public health constituents and participants including federal, state and local public health officials, government officials, private individuals, physicians, nurses and other health professionals regarding opioid use disorder and related issues.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing is required. Other requirements include 1) Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) in the state of Washington OR eligible to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire date. 2) Five (5) or more years (full-time equivalency) of public health nursing experience. 3) Demonstrated experience designing and implementing training.

Job Open: Recovery Centers of King County

RckcRecovery Centers of King County (RCKC) is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to work in its Seattle facility.  RCKC is a Community Treatment Program and part of the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Clinical Trials Network. The Research Assistant will assist in the administration of a large NIDA-funded multi-site study investigating the comparative safety and effectiveness of buprenorphine versus Vivitrol for the treatment of opioid and opiate dependence. The primary purpose of the Research Assistant position is to represent the “front line” of this research and to carry out the day-to-day activities of this study. The Research Assistant will work in collaboration with the study's Research Coordinator, medical staff, and staff from the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the University of Washington in implementing this study protocol.

Postdoc Position at UW: Substance Use & Psychometrics Research

PsychometricsA half-time post-doctoral fellowship is availble, beginning Summer 2014 through January 2015. The fellow will be appointed as a Research Associate in the Department of Psychology at the UW, working with Brian P. Flaherty, PhD Associate Professor. 

The fellow will focus on applied latent class analysis, mixture models, and other latent variable models within the domains of substance use and psychometrics research. Work will focus on theoretically-oriented application and evaluation of these models. Fellows are expected to assist in data preparation, analysis, and to participate in the preparation of articles for publication.

Applicants must have: (a) a Ph.D. in a behavioral, social, quantitative, or health-related field; (b) background in substance use research; (c) solid familiarity with latent variable models, including latent class and mixture models.
