Starts with One: Washington State Opioid Awareness Campaign

All Washingtonians have a role to play in protecting our families and communities from opioid misuse and abuse, and it starts with being informed.  The state's new Starts With One - Opioid Awareness Campaign will help to prevent opioid misuse and abuse and encourage safe storage and disposal of prescription pain medications by teaching:

• the dangers of prescription drug misuse and abuse
• how to safely store, use and dispose of prescription drugs
• how to respond to an opioid overdose

Last week in Spokane, Fox28 hosted a panel of experts discussing opioid misuse and abuse: Caleb Banta-Green (UW Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute), Charissa Fotinos (WA Health Care Authority), Julia Havens from WA Division of Behavioral Health & Recovery, and Kristi Sharpe from the community organization Clarkston EPIC.

"The Anonymous People" Free Screening on Saturday, Dec. 9

Please join the King County Recovery Coalition and the Washington Recovery Alliance for a FREE screening of The Anonymous People, a documentary about the 23 million people in the U.S. in long-term recovery from substance use disorder.   You can view the trailer here.

Immediately after the film, there will be an interactive discussion and opportunities to get involved in the recovery movement locally, plus freshly popped popcorn, a candy buffet, soda, raffle prizes, and holiday treats!  

Recovery Advocacy Teach-In
Immediately prior to the film screening, our partner organization, United Peers of Washington, will host an Advocacy Teach-In at a classroom across the street from the film venue.  Polish your skills for effective advocacy: Be ready to advocate for mental health and addiction treatment and recovery services!  Master the art of telling your story and presenting your “ask” so your listener stays engaged.

ADAI Funds Marijuana Research Studies with I-502 Monies

Using funds from the I-502 Dedicated Marijuana Fund intended for marijuana research at the University of Washington, ADAI awarded two marijuana research grants in October, 2017. The goal of the Small Grant program is to stimulate research by providing initial funding for promising pilot projects which may ultimately be developed into full research studies with outside grant support.
