Interventionists for Study of Opioid Overdose Prevention

The UW Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute has openings for two interventionists for a new study aimed at reducing the occurrence of opioid overdose. This prospective, randomized emergency department trial will study the effectiveness of an intervention that combines opioid overdose prevention, education and intervention that includes take-home naloxone with brief behavioral change counseling. The study will recruit both heroin users (n=500) and pharmaceutical opioid users at elevated risk for overdose (n=500). Outcomes of interest include subsequent opioid overdoses and overdose risk behaviors.

The Interventionists will recruit and enroll study subjects, obtain informed consent, collect background data, and deliver the study intervention at Harborview Medical Center. Interventionists will use brief behavioral change counseling to develop strategies to address overdose risks. Interventionists will use a non-judgmental and non-confrontational motivational interviewing approach to deliver the intervention. Interventionists will also demonstrate to subjects how to administer an intra-nasal study medication that could be used in the event of a future overdose.
