Working part-time during high school may be unavoidable for many teenagers who need to save money for college or contribute to their family’s household expenses. But a new study by a UW researcher shows that working during the school year can impede high school performance and cause behavior problems, such as drug use and delinquency.
“Especially in a recessed economy, many adolescents may feel pressure to work during high school,” said Kathryn Monahan, PhD, a UW researcher in the Social Developmental Research Group. “This study suggests that working during the school year is perfectly fine, so long as the work hours for adolescents are restricted to fewer than 20 hours per week.”
The findings are published in the January/February 2011 issue of the journal Child Development.

This single day workshop will cover the Recovery Oriented System of Care (ROSC) which is an integrated system that emphasizing the importance of utilizing numerous strengths and resources to initiate and sustain recovery for clients. Special attention is focused on how lessons learned in Washington State Access to Recovery (ATR) experience can lead towards further system changes to enhance improvements in client engagement retention, and recovery outcome.
The workshop is offered by the Western Regional Counterdrug Training Center in several Washington cities during March through May:

A study led by Tim Stockwell at the University of Victoria in British Columbia found a strong correlation between an increase in private liquor stores and alcohol-related deaths, Reuters reported Jan. 31.
The study was conducted in British Columbia between 2003 and 2008, when the Canadian province's 89 health areas partially privatized alcohol sales and the number of private liquor outlets increased by 40 percent. Researchers looked for relationships between the number of alcohol-related deaths, the density of alcohol outlets, and the proportion that were privately owned.
The study, "Impact on alcohol-related mortality of a rapid rise in the density of private liquor outlets in British Columbia: a local area multi-level analysis," was published online in the journal Addiction on Jan. 18, 2011.

This 1-day training is intended for physicians in primary care, psychiatry, HIV and pain and addiction medicine. The Drug Addiction Act of 2000 permits physicians who are trained or experienced in opiod addiction treatment to obtain waivers to prescribe certain narcotic drugs. Physicians who complete this course will receive the certificate of attendance needed to send to the Secretary of HHS along with the request for the waiver. CME credits available.

Rural physicians until recently have had few tools to help their patients escape opioid addiction. Methadone, the most common treatment for opioid addiction, is unavailable in many rural areas. Dr. Roger Rosenblatt (UW Dept. of Family Medicine) and colleagues from the UW and WSU are engaged in Project ROAM (Rural Opiate Addiction Management Collaborative) and Project ECHO (Extension for Community Health Outcomes), offering rural physicians tools to address this epidemic health issue in rural Washington, including a training in Spokane on March 29. Both boys and girls who are victims of bullying, including bullying through e-mail and the internet, are at elevated risk for depression. However, according to a new University of Washington study published in Prevention Science, adolescent girls may engage in substance use as a result of bullying-related depression.
Jeremy Luk, a PhD candidate in child psychology at the UW, examined data from the 2005/2006 Health Behaviors in School-Aged Children (HBSC) survey, a questionnaire given to students in grades 6 through 10 to assess health and well-being in a social context. Roughly 1,500 U.S. students participated in the survey.
The researchers found that, while depression was linked to bullying in both boys and girls, it also increased the risk for substance use in girls.
