"Blending Addiction Science & Practice: Bridges to the Future"

Nearly 1000 addiction treatment providers, researchers, and policy makers from the Northwest and other states convened in Seattle on Oct. 16 & 17 for the NIDA Blending Conference. Plenary and workshop presentations examined cutting-edge scientific findings about drug abuse and addiction and their application to clinical practice. The conference was part of NIDA's Blending Initiative, designed to accelerate the dissemination of research-based drug abuse treatment findings into community-based practice.

Drug Endangered Children -- Report for Washington State

The Governor's Council on Substance Abuse has produced a review of policies and procedures for drug-endangered children in Washington State. The report presents the results of a survey of local procedures for handling drug-endangered children -- especially children exposed to methamphetamine use.   Child meth-related dangers come from both direct exposures to toxic chemicals present at meth manufacturing sites, as well as abuse and neglect issues arising from having parents on meth.  Local procedures are compared to the steps recommended by the "We Care" matrix.*   

Also studied was whether local procedures differ when a child is drug-endangered through parental abuse or neglect versus when a child is endangered through direct exposure to a drug or associated toxic chemicals.  Additionally, the study explored whether counties have different procedures when a child is endangered by a drug other than meth, such as other illicit drugs, alcohol, or prescription drugs.

New Center for Addictions, Mental Illness and Medically Vulnerable Populations

Seattle's Harborview Medical Center opened a new research and training center to improve the quality and coordination of care for disadvantaged patients with mental illness and the co-morbid conditions of addictions and chronic medical illness.  The Center for Healthcare Improvement for Addictions, Mental Illness and Medically Vulnerable Populations (CHAMMP) will serve as an "incubator" for innovative pilot research projects designed to address shortcomings and disparities in health outcomes for medically vulnerable populations.  Dr. Peter Roy-Byrne, chief of psychiatry at Harborview and UW professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is the Center's director; Toni Krupski, PhD (formerly Research Administrator at DASA) is the associate director.

Blueprint for the States: Policies to Improve the Ways States Organize and Deliver Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Treatment; Findings and Recommendations of a National Policy Panel.

State governments spend over 13% of their budgets on problems related to drug and alcohol abuse. Less than 4% of this amount is spent on prevention and treatment. This report presents the findings and recommendations of a national policy panel convened by Join Together and chaired by former Governor of Massachusetts Michael Dukakis. The panel heard testimony from over 30 experts from around the country, and reviewed written testimony and research about existing models. This manual is intended to make motivational interviewing easy to learn and use in practice with Native American clients with alcohol abuse or dependence.  In addition, the manual is for counselors of any ethnic background who are working with Native American clients.
