ADAI is seeking a half-time Research Coordinator to assist with a federally-funded collaborative research project in partnership with the Suquamish Tribe. The aim of the project is to develop, and implement a needs assessment of health problems, health care needs, and health disparity issues, particularly related to substance use and abuse, of the Suquamish Tribal community, and assist with development, implementation, and evaluation of a community-based and culturally congruent intervention. Joseph Trimble, PhD, Professor of Psychology at the Center for Cross-Cultural Research, Western Washington University, is the invited speaker for the Allen L. Edwards Lectureship, hosted by the UW Department of Psychology. The title of his lecture will be "Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research with Ethnocultural Populations." Dr.Trimble will also give a brown bag seminar the following day, titled "Tales from the Field: Challenges and Foibles in Conducting Cross-Cultural Research with Ethnocultural Populations." A new article by UW authors Klein et al. describes an association between intoxication level and the risk of campfire burns. In the study, eighty-one percent (13/16) of patients who sustained contact burns were intoxicated, compared with 11% (1/11) of patients who sustained flash/flame injuries from igniting the campfire. The study is printed in the Sept-Oct. 2005 issue of the Journal of Burn Care & Rehabilitation. [PubMed abstract]
